TRAVELERS REST, S.C. —

Female high school students from across the Upstate took part in a music composition workshop Sunday to help tell the story of Laodicea "Dicey" Langston through music.

Peter B. Kay, with the Spartanburg Philharmonic, led the workshop, encouraging students to read Langston's story aloud and then asking them what they believe certain elements of the story would sound like.

Musicians from the Greenville Symphony Orchestra also participated in the workshop, bringing the girls' ideas to life, creating the musical equivalents to story elements like rushing water and galloping horse hooves.

Langston, a South Carolina native, was just 15 years old when she played a pivotal role in the Revolutionary War, serving as a patriot spy. Her story continues to inspire young women
