PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) -- The Prince George's County Police Department (PGPD) is mourning the loss of one of its officers, who was a father and former volunteer firefighter.

The police department announced on Sunday that Police Officer First Class Alex Belcher passed away on Oct. 8 following a "hard-fought medical battle."

Belcher was a seven-year veteran of the PGPD. Before joining, he served as a volunteer firefighter/EMT with the Dover Township Fire Department.

PGPD said he spent his career serving as a patrol officer in Hyattsville. He was recently assigned to Shift 4 and was a member of Academy Session 139.
