IOWA CITY — Iowa City celebrated Indigenous People's Day on Sunday, highlighting the impact on the community. The event featured food, live music, and other activities, drawing attention not only in Iowa City but across the state.
Recognized annually on the second Monday of October, Indigenous People's Day serves as a counter-celebration to Columbus Day. It aims to raise awareness about indigenous rights and cultures.
"I think education is the way we grow together as humans," Malory Smysor, Iowa City Parks and Recreation Program Supervisor, said. "People are afraid of what they don't know and the more that we can learn about each other’s differences and what makes us unique, it will make us a better community in the long run."
