[WASHINGTON, D.C.] — The government shutdown has reached its 13th day with no resolution in sight. Today, the Department of Education laid off nearly all its special education staff.

The layoffs primarily affected the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, which supports programs serving millions nationwide.

The American Federation of Government Employees reported that more than 450 people at the agency had been laid off as of Friday.

A letter to staff cited the ongoing shutdown as the reason for the unavoidable reduction in workforce.
