[LINN COUNTY, Iowa] — A Linn County teenager faces the possibility of 50 years in prison after being sentenced for murder.
A judge sentenced 17-year-old Baynon Berry for the 2023 shooting death of 16-year-old Michael McCune.
During the sentencing, Berry's family and former teachers pleaded for a lighter sentence, emphasizing his potential for rehabilitation.
Michael McCune's family also shared memories of him during the hearing. "Michael is someone who is kind caring, funny, protective and loyal," Keonce McCune, Michael's brother, said. "Michael was someone you could always come to for comfort and advice and just overall would put you in a good mood."
Berry received a 50-year sentence without a minimum time requirement, making him eligible for parole immediately.
