The family of a 6-year-old girl who died while on a field trip to Carlton Farms in Rockmart is searching for answers.

Last Wednesday, Victoria King, a student at McGarity Elementary School, died after being found unresponsive in a pool beside a house at the site.

NBC affiliate 11Alive in Atlanta reports that a staff member noticed the girl missing around noon before she was found in the pool.

The Polk County coroner said medical staff pronounced the child dead at Atrium Floyd Medical Center in Rome, Georgia.

King's family released a statement on Sunday, publicly grieving for the first time since her death. Her uncles and aunts wrote an emotional message on behalf of her parents:

"The family is still in deep grief and struggling with unanswered questions. They have not been told
