PHOENIX — A person has been detained for allegedly shooting his stepfather Sunday in a Phoenix neighborhood.

Officers responded to a residence near 39th and Maryland avenues at about 7:30 p.m. for reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found an unconscious man in the backyard suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The man was pronounced dead by paramedics and later identified as 57-year-old Jaunarius Moreno, officials said.

Police said 31-year-old Brandon Alvarez allegedly called 911 and told dispatchers he shot his stepfather.

Alvarez and Moreno had apparently gotten into a verbal argument that resulted in Alvarez pulling out a gun and shooting his stepfather.

Police said the victim and suspect reportedly knew each other. The investigation is ongoing.
