NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — New Britain police have arrested the mother and aunt of an 11-year-old girl whose remains were discovered behind an abandoned home in the city earlier this month.

Farmington Police Chief Paul Melanson confirmed the arrests during a press conference on Monday afternoon in which investigators laid out details of the case.

Karla Garcia, the mother of 11-year-old Jacqueline "Mimi" Torres, was arrested Sunday night and now faces charges of murder with special circumstances, among others. Her sister, Jackelyn Garcia, was arrested as well. She faces charges of cruelty to persons under 19 years of age.

Police also issued an arrest warrant for Karla Garcia's boyfriend, Jonaton Nanita, charging him with murder with special circumstances and tampering with evidence. He has n
