GARY, Ind. (WNDU) - One of the country’s first African American mayors is being honored in Gary.
Michiana native Richard G. Hatcher served as Gary’s first Black mayor for five terms, spanning 20 years.
The city renamed Grant Street to Richard Gordon Hatcher Boulevard.
Hatcher was known for finding innovative solutions to urban problems.
He served as a spokesperson for civil rights, and he’s also credited for helping grow the city of Merrillville.
Hatcher passed away in 2019. He’s remembered by his three daughters who spoke at Monday’s event.
