A man has been taken into custody by police after an alleged high-speed car chase and carjacking spree.

Victoria Police allege the man was carrying a firearm as he walked through Melbourne CBD on the morning of October 14, following a wild car chase through the city's northwestern suburbs.

Police allege the man had stolen a number of cars during a carjacking spree earlier on October 14.

"Police have arrested a male in Melbourne's CBD this morning following alleged carjackings in Tarneit and North Melbourne," a Victoria Police statement said.

A Victoria Police Air Wing unit was seen over Melbourne CBD as police searched for the man.

Heavily armed police were deployed near the Parliament of Victoria on Bourke Street, as the man was taken into custody.
