DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) - Flavors of India is offering free meals to federal employees impacted by the shutdown, providing relief to workers who continue to face mounting bills without paychecks.

The gesture hits close to home for the Makkar family, who have relatives working for Customs & Border Patrol and understand the financial strain a shutdown can create.

“Your car payment stays the same, your food expenses stay the same, everything is the same,” said Apjeet Makkar, owner and manager of Flavors of India. “You can’t just say, ‘OK, we’re not getting paid, we can cut this, we can’t pay the mortgage. Banks are going to take the house; the car is going to be taken out,” he said.
