The Providence Journal analyzed billing code data from all of the state’s acute care hospitals, ranging from diagnostic procedures such as endoscopies and colonoscopies to major heart and bowel surgery, as well as giving birth.

Insurers negotiate different prices for procedures at each hospital, referred to as the "commercial price." Many also offer "cash" prices, separate from the prices negotiated with insurance companies, as well as negotiated prices for Medicare and Medicaid plans.

The following is what The Providence Journal found for each procedure and code analyzed. Many hospitals had prices for procedures they don’t perform, called "zombie" rates. They have been removed from the analysis where possible.
