NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks recovered from an early slump and gained ground on Wall Street Tuesday as investors brushed off escalating trade tensions between the U.S. and China.
The S&P 500 rose 0.2% in afternoon trading after slumping as much as 1.5% earlier. Big technology stocks with outsized values initially pushed the index down, but broader gains from other sectors eventually countered that weight.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 366 points, or 0.8%, as of 2:45 p.m. Eastern time. The Nasdaq composite slipped 0.3%.
