Proposals for new powers to check the bank account details of Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefit claimants are progressing. A bill is currently making its way through Parliament, which includes powers to compel banks to disclose information about people claiming certain benefits, to ensure they are genuinely eligible.

These powers, known as an eligibility verification measure, will initially be used to verify the details of those claiming Universal Credit, Employment and Support Allowance and Pension Credit, but could potentially be extended to other benefits.

The legislation also includes provisions allowing DWP officials to directly deduct an amount from a person's bank account, in cases where they owe money and refuse to pay. The new laws have been approved by the House of
