Aaron David Miller, a Middle East policy analyst and former Shaker Heights resident, cautioned that while Hamas’ release of the 20 remaining hostages – who returned to Israel on Oct. 13 after 738 days in captivity – is a positive result of the ceasefire that paused the two-year war, it is only the first step in a long and complex effort to make the truce permanent.

“It’s not a peace agreement and it doesn’t guarantee an end of the war in Gaza,” Miller told the Cleveland Jewish News. “But, it does, in a rather remarkable way, create a moment. And if, in fact, the three key elements of the first phase of this (peace plan) go ahead and endure, it could provide a foundation on which to build and end the war. But we’re a long way from that.”
