Visitors at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City were left stunned on the morning of October 10 when a man urinated on the Altar of Confession, one of Catholicism’s holiest sites.
The man reportedly bypassed security barriers and climbed the steps to the altar around 9:30 a.m. before committing the shocking act.
Social media footage shows him with his trousers down, urinating on the sacred site believed to rest above Saint Peter’s tomb.
Worshippers and tourists reacted with horror, some looking away while others watched in disbelief. Plainclothes officers quickly intervened and arrested the man, who allegedly made an obscene gesture before being taken into custody.
The Vatican has not released his identity, but authorities have launched an investigation.
