Residents living nearby the Welland landfill were urged to keep their windows closed as a large fire burned at the Niagara Region facility for more than 20 hours.
Welland Fire and Emergency Services acting Chief Matt Richardson said firefighters were called to the landfill at about 6 p.m. Monday for a reported pallet fire.
“When crews arrived, we discovered an enormously large pile of scrap lumber and brush on fire at the Humberstone Landfill,” he said.
