Children's book publisher Puffin has paused sales of a popular children's series and told schools and libraries to remove it from shelves.

The alert comes after it discovered that a website address featured in the Spy Dog series by Andrew Cope has been hijacked by a pornography site.

The url printed in the Spy Dog, Spy Pups and Spy Cat series has been redirecting readers to unrestricted adult content.

Puffin, an imprint of Penguin Random House, says it has 'immediately paused' sales of the affected books, which are aimed at seven- to 12-year-olds.

In a letter to parents, one Greater Manchester school said: "Within the books, there is a link which encourages children to find out about additional information told during the story.
