Beloit College is celebrating a significant achievement as Joel Mokyr, a former Upton Scholar, has been awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics.

Mokyr, a professor at Northwestern University, was recognized for his contributions to economic history and the economics of technological change and innovation, according to a community announcement.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences honored Mokyr “for having identified the prerequisites for sustained growth through technological progress.”

Mokyr's connection to Beloit College is notable. He served as the Upton Scholar for the 2023-24 academic year and previously visited the college in 2011-12 to deliver remarks on behalf of Elinor Ostrom, who was unable to attend due to health reasons.
