MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Dozens of people gathered at the FedEx Institute of Technology to discuss one topic: the growing rate of HIV in Shelby County.

"We need to just inform the public, be more transparent, and let people really know what the situation is," said Dr. Bruce Randolph, the Shelby County Health Department interim director and health officer.

According to the health department, in 2023, the Memphis metropolitan area had the highest HIV incidence rate out of any metropolitan area in the U.S.

Officials say new cases have consistently been on the rise since 2020.

Deputy Director Lorrie Brooks says this is why the health department called on health advocates and community organizations for the 2nd Annual HIV Summit.
