WATERBURY, Conn. (WFSB) - Officials have announced on Wednesday that construction has started on the redevelopment of the Waterbury train station.

City leaders said the project includes a new platform that complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

It will also feature a 1,600 square foot indoor waiting room inside the historic Waterbury Union Station.

Eyewitness News spoke to Waterbury Mayor Paul Pernerewski about the new changes.

“For so many people, this train line represents opportunity,” said It helps brings jobs in reach, supports downtown revitalization and connects Waterbury and the wider region in a very meaningful way."

The project is part of the Lamont Administration’s broader plan to upgrade all six stations on the Waterbury branch line.
