The family that suffered an “unimaginable loss” in a deadly wrong-way crash involving Durham police on Highway 401 last year is suing the officers involved, the police board and the estate of the man who hit them.

The recently filed statement of claim from Gokulnath Manivannan and Ashwitha Jawahar — who lost their baby boy and his grandparents in the crash — as well as the couple’s extended family comes as two officers are facing criminal charges in the incident.

On April 29, 2024, Manivannan was driving the family east on Highway 401 toward Whitby with their three-month-old son, Aditya, and the boy’s grandparents Manivannan Srinivasapillai, 60, and Mahalakshmi Ananthakrishnan, 55.
