BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - October is Infant Loss Awareness Month. Staff at Sanford Health’s Birthing Center are painfully aware of this occurrence and support grieving parents through these losses every day.

This is why the hospital offers resources and provides mementos, such as hand and foot molds. Staff also organized a funeral for all of the lives lost over the year. Director of Women’s Services Bethany Bernhardt said the best way to support people going through this kind of loss is awareness.

“I know a lot of people think of it as ‘miscarriage.’ We don’t think of it that way,” said Bernhardt. “It’s different than the loss of a parent or a grandparent or someone who you have a huge past with. This is someone who you have a future with that you’re losing.”
