(CNN) – Senator Mitch McConnell tripped and fell on the basement floor of the Capitol Thursday.

The fall happened while McConnell was walking to the Senate floor.

The Republican senator was holding on to his security detail when an alleged protester walked up beside him to ask about immigration raids.

The 83-year-old briefly let go and stumbled to the ground.

McConnell got back on his feet with the help from a police officer and waved at the camera.

It’s unclear if he suffered any injuries.

McConnell has fallen several times in the past few years.

The former Senate leader plans to retire in January 2027.
