COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCSC) - South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster issued an executive order on Friday suspending the treasurer of Williamsburg County following criminal charges filed against her and four others.

The executive order places Margaret Kimber W. Cooper on suspension until she is either acquitted or convicted or the indictment otherwise disposed of, or until a new treasurer is elected, whichever occurs first.

McMaster appointed Pearl R. Brown to serve as Williamsburg County treasurer in the meantime.

Cooper is facing charges of misconduct in office, use of official position or office for financial gain, an ethics act violation and criminal conspiracy, the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office said on Thursday.

The indictment also listed four other Williamsburg County officials
