R eacting to a rise in preventable incidents and damages that have cost taxpayers $100,000 since July, Queen Creek Unified School District has changed its refresher training rules for its bus drivers and conducting ride-along evaluations.

The district Transportation Department reports that since the beginning of the school year, it has responded to 12 school bus accidents – 10 of which were deemed preventable – and documented four separate incidents involving buses backing into fences or fuel island poles in the transportation yard.

Those accidents have cost the district $100,000 since July.

The monthly Governing Board report from the department details a strategic plan to address the rise in preventable incidents, which are being credited to route complacency and inattention.
