SPOKANE, Wash. – Family and friends of Derick Shafer gathered this evening on Spokane’s lower South Hill for a candlelight vigil to honor his life.

Shafer, 38, was killed on October 12 while in his car in the 600 block of South McClellan Street.

NonStop Local was present at the vigil and spoke with Shafer’s sister, Ashley Smith, who has been vocal about her brother’s death and the need for justice.

“Grief is kind of weird. This whole thing is weird. And the little things that make me feel better may not make other people feel better. I think we should never be judging how someone grieves because people grieve differently and this is helping me right now and helping my family. So that’s why we decided to come here first,” Smith said.
