LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has joined a coalition of 20 other state attorneys general defending First Amendment rights for non-citizen students and faculty.

The coalition filed an Amicus Brief in the case of Stanford Daily Publishing Corporation v. Rubio.

The case surrounds The Stanford Daily, an independent student newspaper at Stanford University, and two executive orders.

Orders 1416 and 14188 allow the Trump Administration to investigate and deport non-citizen students over political speech. AG Nessel calls the policy “Ideological Deportation Policy.”

Non-citizen students are foreign nationals in the United States studying at colleges and universities. Typically, they are legally in the U.S. on student visas or similar programs.
