Omaha City Council to vote on homelessness ordinance Tuesday
On Tuesday, the Omaha City Council will vote on an ordinance that would make camping on public property a misdemeanor.
During a town hall Monday night , Mayor John Ewing Jr. said he opposes criminalizing homelessness. He threatened to issue his first veto in opposition to the ordinance .
“If the vote doesn’t go the way I expect on Tuesday, I will give my first veto,” Ewing said to applause from more than 50 residents at his second town hall meeting.
With the proposed ordinance , people at the camps would be relocated to shelters. After steps and actions are taken, those that do not comply would face fines of up to $30
