CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Mecklenburg County Commissioners heard a presentation on Tuesday night from the developers who want to rebuild the historic and iconic Excelsior Club.
The developers, Shawn Kennedy and Tim Sittema, requested $1.5 million from the county to help restore The Excelsior. The overall project would cost $8.3 million. People showed up Tuesday night to tell the county commissioners the impact of rebuilding The Excelsior.
“It’s a chance to replace what’s broken with something beautiful,” said Historic Washington Heights Neighborhood Association Nathan Hernandez. “To make this corridor not just historic but thriving again.”
The Excelsior Club opened in 1944, and it was the place where African Americans organized politically, gathered for special events, and left motivated
