MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Tennessee State Representative filed a new legislation on Tuesday that allows voters to recall elected officials through a defined process.
HB 1448 , proposed by Torrey C. Harris (D-Memphis), would give voters the chance to "recall elections for elected members of a local legislative body, city and county mayors, sheriffs, trustees, registers, clerks, assessors of property, and members of a school board," as written in the bill.
“This legislation is about restoring the power of accountability where it belongs — with the people," said Rep. Harris in a press statement. "Our communities deserve to have confidence that if their elected leaders stop representing their values or fail to uphold the public trust, there is a process in place to act responsibly and democratical
