Former Queensland Premier Campbell Newman says a controversial new accord with Indigenous councils does not "sit well”, given Queenslanders’ strong rejection of the federal Voice to Parliament.
The Crisafulli government this week signed an accord with Queensland Indigenous leaders, giving First Nations councils to be streamlined access to the state’s cabinet.
The accord would see Indigenous mayors and councilors from 17 councils meet with Queensland ministers annually to advise them on issues facing their communities.
Speaking to Sky News on Friday evening, Mr Newman raised serious questions about the move, citing Queensland voters’ “very solid repudiation” of the Indigenous Voice to Parliament in the 2023 referendum.
