MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) -- News13 and the Grand Strand Medical Center came together Saturday for a "Crush the Crisis" drug takeback event at the Seaboard Street Target.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., community members dropped off unneeded prescription drugs in in the parking lot, with Grand Strand Regional Medical Center pharmacists helping to collect old and expired pills.

Organizers said it's a great way to help get the wrong medicines out of circulation while disposing of them safely with help by Myrtle Beach police.

Officials last year were able to collect about 200 pounds' worth of drugs -- a figure they hoped to double this time around. In support of "National Drug Take Back Day," the event also aims to prevent misuse of pills and opioid addiction.
