SAUGERTIES, N.Y. — Saugerties High’s football team had a rough outing last week when defending state Class B champion Port Jervis scored 34 unanswered points in the second half to knock the Sawyers from the unbeaten ranks with a 48-14 victory.
To make matters even worse, Sawyers’ leading rusher Gabe Valles went out with a knee injury. Coach Nick Bernard said Valles will have an MRI to determine the seriousness of the injury.
So it was imperative for the Sawyers to put the loss to Port Jervis behind them and get ready for the upcoming Section 9 playoffs. And while it took a little more time than expected, Saugerties eventually got the job done with a strong second-half performance to beat New Paltz 29-14 on Senior Recognition Day on Saturday, Oct. 25.
