GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - City of Green Bay workers teamed up with the city’s Conservation Corps and members of the community to help remove invasive plant species from a local park’s ecosystem.

It’s part of a national push to do something helpful or kind on Saturday’s “Make a Difference Day”.

People gathered at John Muir Park to remove invasive buckthorn as well as learn how to turn unwanted plants into a form of charcoal called biochar, which is beneficial for soil health.

Removing the buckthorn also clears the way for trails and deer paths in the area, something organizers say is a big problem in local ecosystems.

“Since the start of the Green Bay Conservation Corps, we’ve removed about 200 acres, and this winter we have the goal to remove another 40 to 50 acres of invasive species.
