PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. — Prince George's County Public Schools is seeing a spike in cases of hand, foot and mouth disease. According to the school district, as of Thursday, over 40 schools in the district have reported cases of HFMD. It's a viral illness that usually affects young children, but anyone can get HFMD. Here's what you need to know.

Symptoms of hand, foot and mouth disease

Symptoms include:

Fever

Poor appetite

Sore throat

Other cold-like symptoms

The above symptoms may occur 1-2 days before the onset of painful sores in the mouth and a red rash, which may develop into blisters or ulcers on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. (It may also appear on the buttocks or genitalia.) The rash may last for 7 to 10 days.
