Last month, Sir Keir Starmer announced a new digital ID scheme will be available to all UK citizens and legal residents. People won’t need to carry this ID on them and won’t be asked to produce it except for one specific situation; proving their Right to Work. ‌

It will be mandatory for people to share their digital ID when applying for a job that checks their Right to Work. Labour hopes to implement this requirement by the end of Parliament. ‌

It’s hoped that this will curb the prospect of work for people who are in the UK illegally. As well as saving time in processes that otherwise rely on paper records and copies of identity documents to complete these checks. ‌
