A Rhode Island man was rescued Sunday night after becoming stranded near the summit of Mount Washington as his headlamp and cellphone died in windblown snow.
Owen Strommer, 20, of Wakefield, Rhode Island, called 911 about 7 p.m. while on the Tuckerman Ravine Trail about 0.3 miles below the summit, according to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. He told authorities his equipment was failing and he had no backup gear.
Conditions at the summit included windblown snow with limited visibility, a temperature of 21 degrees and a wind chill of 3 degrees.
