LUBBOCK, Texas -- With temperatures expected to dip into the low 20s and 30s this week, it is now the time for homeowners to prepare for the first freeze of the season.

Silas Jones, owner of Leaky's, said it’s common for West Texas to see the first hard freeze around Halloween, and waiting until it hits can lead to costly damage.

“We get our first freeze almost every year around Halloween, so it’s a good reminder to go out and make sure everything’s ready for that first freeze,” Jones said.

Jones said anything exposed to the cold is at risk. That includes pipes outside the home, in garages or barns, and even bathrooms built along exterior walls.

“If it’s inside your house, it’s probably safe. If it’s outside or in an unconditioned space, it’s probably not,” he said.
