RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – The Raleigh Police Department is observing Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
On Tuesday morning, the department held a ceremony honoring some of those survivors.
This year's theme was called, "I'm still here and empowered."
The National Domestic Violence Hotline says more than 12 million people every year are victims of rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner.
Charmaynn Cole was one of the survivors who spoke during Tuesday's event.
"What I would love to tell survivors of domestic violence and those facing domestic violence is to stay in the fight," Cole said. "Live to see another day. There are resources out there. You don’t have to suffer in silence."
