IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - In Ben McCollum’s first year coaching the Hawkeyes, he’s bringing some family along the way.
His son Peyton is just a freshman and may not get a ton of minutes this year, but could be an impact player in years to come. The younger McCollum didn’t initially plan to play for his father.
“Initially, our whole deal was, that he wasn’t going to play for me,” Ben McCollum said.
In high school, Peyton was being recruited by a few other Division One schools. Then Ben took his first Division one job.
“Naturally it also hurt his recruitment. I think his junior year, he was being recruited when I was at a Division Two. Then we got to Drake and then all of sudden, some of those schools that were calling, didn’t call anymore, just because they assumed he was going to play f
