A year-and-a-half long search for Michigan’s biggest trees resulted in 16 new potential state champion trees and the discovery of a massive weeping willow in Shiawassee County.
While not a new state champ, the willow submitted by Kathy Briggerman was the overall largest tree in the entire 2023-2025 Michigan Big Tree Hunt. Its twisty trunk has a girth of 327 inches – that’s more than 27 feet around.
ReLeaf Michigan celebrated the winners of the 16 th biennial tree hunt earlier this month. Briggerman had the largest tree submitted by an adult. Siblings Corey and Dani Town won the prize for the largest tree submitted by youth with a Lapeer County sugar maple measuring 240 inches around – that’s 20 feet.
