AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) - The Georgia Department of Transportation is closing both northbound lanes of State Route 56/Mike Padgett Highway at Butler Creek on Wednesday, after a washout was discovered under the approach slab to the bridge.

According to GDOT, it's about one mile south of Interstate 520/Bobby Jones Expressway.

The traffic northbound is being reduced to one lane. All northbound traffic will be redirected to the paved median. Both southbound lanes will stay open.

Maintenance staff is estimating that repairs will take at least one week, as weather permits.

Those driving in the area are asked to slow down and use caution when navigating the work zone.
