LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - The City of Laredo has removed street murals containing “political, social, or ideological messages” from public roadways to comply with Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) directive .

The city complied with the order on Wednesday morning, October 29, following TxDOT’s October 8 letter requiring the elimination of such messages from public roadways, according to a statement from the mayor’s office.

The decision was made to avoid losing more than $1.6 billion in TXDOT funding and to remain compliant with existing state and federal laws, the mayor said.

The removal comes after Abbott’s executive order targeting what the state considers political messaging on public infrastructure.
