COLUMBUS, Ohio — Hundreds gathered to celebrate Brutus Buckeye’s birthday, a reminder of how much Ohio State fans adore one of college football’s favorite mascots.
Brutus turned 60 years old and Ohio State held a party Wednesday at the RPAC, Tom W. Davis Gym to celebrate.
Brutus has gone through many changes since he was created six decades ago.
Here’s a look back on how Brutus came to be and the history of Ohio State’s beloved mascot.
Part mascot. Part superhero. Brutus Buckeye is the face of one of the most successful college athletic programs in history.
Sally Lanyon is considered his birth mother.

"For all these years after, it's so amazing to me and I have such a sense of pride about it that I contributed in some way to this making of an icon," Lanyon said.
