GALVESTON
Moody Bank announced Wednesday an initiative to donate $25,000 to food banks and community organizations across the state ahead of federal food benefits being canceled on Saturday because of the federal government shutdown.
Galveston County organizations receiving $2,500 each as part of the initiative include the M.I. Lewis Service Center in Dickinson, the Galveston County Food Bank in Texas City and St. Vincent’s House. The initiative is in addition to more than $100,000 Moody Bank gives in annual charitable contributions, representatives said.
Last year, about 3.2 million Texans relied on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, including more than 35,000 in Galveston County, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
