MANDAN, ND (KXNET) — “Orange is that color of warmth, safety, it's highly visible, so it gets your attention,” Pam VanBeek says.
Near the end of October, students and staff at Mandan Middle School celebrate Unity Day. It's an idea that started from an ambassador group at the school.
“At the middle school, it can be hard for kids sometimes. Kids are growing, changing, they have, they're just different, so they are looking at ways to unite to make sure that we are teaching our kids that it's ok to include others, to show kindness, to be accepting,” Vanbeek says. The movement started three years ago and has continued to grow, ever since.
VanBeek is one of three counselors at the school who says she hopes the "day" turns into something that's celebrated, year-round.
