HAMBLEN, Tenn. (WATE) — With a federal government shutdown continuing, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients in Tennessee are bracing for a potential pause in benefits as early as next month.
Local food support organizations in Hamblen County say they are already seeing more families seeking help, worried about how long benefits will last.
“Certainly the need has always been there, but with the government shutdown and that piece kind of looming, people are trying to be proactive and get ahead of that,” said Ashley Hux, executive director of Central Services. “We’ve certainly seen an uptick in the last few weeks.”
Central Services provides food boxes, clothing, and baby formula to families — assistance many say they will rely on if SNAP is disrupted.
