MILFORD, Conn. — Two massive barges ran ashore on Woodmont Beach in Milford Thursday afternoon, according to multiple officials.
The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that around 3:30 p.m., two 140-foot hopper barges separated from their moorings and drifted approximately five miles.
They then ran ashore in Milford. Coast Guard officials say this most likely occurred due to bad weather and rough seas.
The barges are empty and pose no threat to the environment, a Coast Guard statement said.
The Milford Fire Department posted on Facebook that it responded to Woodmont Beach following the incident.
Fire department officials say the Coast Guard and owner are creating a plan to salvage the barges. Residents are asked not to approach them.
They added that strong winds and rough seas are expected
