KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The University of Tennessee made a sad announcement this week that retired mascot Smokey X had been diagnosed with cancer. The beloved bluetick coonhound presided over one of the most eventful periods in the history of Tennessee football in his 10-year stint on the sidelines marked by a return to national prominence and multiple coaching changes.
Smokey X was born February 21, 2012 and made his on-field debut less than 18 months later, becoming the first mascot who wasn't a descendent of the original Smokey. He was born and bred here in Tennessee at Davis Branch Blueticks in Shelbyville.
The 2013 season was a first for Smokey X and new head coach Butch Jones. While the team recorded its first win over a ranked opponent in four years by knocking off No. 11 South
